Tomorrow is the Chinese New Year and Year of the Dragon. I went to the annual local dance performance this afternoon that celebrates the new year. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the high pitch Chinese singing, but I love the music in general and especially the costumes and colors. It was an eye candy kind of show!

We heard a rumor that Hank's teacher is related to Bob Dylan. She confirmed it last week when Hank asked her. Her husband is a relation. Gary, being the big Bob Dylan fan that he is, has been prepping Hank with Dylan quotes to use in the classroom.

It was a memorable day yesterday to honor the memory of Otto and Roscoe's dad, Ward, by witnessing the crushing of his car by a very, very large Army tank. (Maybe all tanks are that big? It was the first one I had ever seen in real life.) We miss Ward. He was a good guy. He would be proud of what nice kids his boys are. We love them. Nancy, too.

Gary and Hank are not huge fans (although Gary will admit that two of his favorite shows ever are "West Side Story" and "Guys and Dolls." Nevertheless, Hope and I LOVE musicals and go when we can. We especially make a point of going to see my friend, Jean Ann, and her family in them. Last night was "Beauty and The Beast" at Eden Prairie High School. It was so good. I asked Jean Ann how she can usher and watch the show with her very talented kids in it without crying her eyes out. Michael and Jessica are amazing.Michael was Lumiere and Jessica was The Whisk (among other things.)

Top Disneyland Highlights

1. Vacationing with Andrea and Keri. They made all arrangements, bought all the supplies, went on a murder walk to replenish said supplies late Monday night while I took a 17 hour nap. Why they aren't travel agents yet, I don't know. They put anxious travelers at ease. They kindly tolerate my airport anxiety. And they are hilarious.

2. Princess hair with tiaras;

3. Riding Splash Mountain 3x in a row on Saturday night without getting out of our log canoe;

4. Finding princess hair for Andrea when she was convinced Disney princess hair only came in blond and brunette;

5. At least 75 text messages from Hope saying, "Hi Mom!" and, "Hank won't stop punching me," and, "I was thinking, Mom, that maybe it would be fun to have my next birthday party in Disneyland."

6. Delicious tropical beverages at Trader Sam's and meeting Keri's Aunt Sara;

7. Meeting up with my cousin Dusty (whom I hadn't seen in at least 25 years) and meeting his awesome wife Tami and their sweet kids;

8. Being the first person to lose anything on the Peter Pan ride. We came to an abrupt stop at the end and my sunglasses fell off my head and onto the track below. The workers, excuse me, cast members, acted like this had never happened before!

9. Losing a flip-flop on California Screamin' while getting on the rollercoaster. The flip flop got caught on something and slipped down between the track and the platform.Disney cast members put their lives at risk to retrieve it and keep the coaster ride running.

In our family, more often than not, we tend to compliment each other on farts. For example, someone will say, "Nice!" Or, "Nice one!" Or, "Gesundheit!"

We are a family that loves and respects each other.

Most often the dealer (aka 'The One Who Dealt It') doesn't reply to the sarcastic compliment. But Hope does. She matches the acknowledgement these days with, "I KNOW! Right?!"

I was looking online today for my high school science teacher's obituary and came across this blog from my hometown. The Lucas Countyan. There is a post about my teacher, Larry Clark. He was a memorable teacher. In addition to being a science teacher, he was a mortician and florist. What a smart combination of interests and occupation. This blog makes me miss small town life where there seemed to be fewer decisions needing to be made every day. Or maybe that was my perspective back then when I lived there. When I was a child. :-)

If you squint you might be able to see the little man in the middle there with his blue arms reaching for the quarterback. Hank is small but fierce. St. Louis Park players are on average a LOT bigger than Hank's team. Hopkins lost but they gave it there all.

Miracle at the Middle School

My student who was hit by a car this summer and almost died came back to school today. He has a hell of a scar all the way across his head (head hit the windshield...no helmet) and he kind of looks like a robot from the knee down on one leg (pins holding all his bones together). Aside from some visual problems, he is doing well. It gave us chills to see him come in the building, greet old friends and staff, and handle his day as well as he did. When the accident happened, the state patrol came to reconstruct the accident scene. The first newspaper report indicated that that was usually done when there was a fatality involved. But this kid lived. It was a GREAT day to be at school.

Baby Boom

Our neighborhood is about to expand by three new babies in the next few months. First up are neighbors Sue and Neil who are due any day now with their first baby. They are going to be awesome parents even if Sue won't let her baby girl eat Cheetos. Not even the baked ones. Ever. Baby Johnson is going to have strict, loving parents and a no-Cheetos lifestyle. When she grows up and goes to school, she might hear stories from older kids about the years when chocolate milk was occasionally offered with school lunch. She might wonder why she never got to have chocolate milk with her lunch at school and she can go home and ask her mom those questions.

All kidding aside, Sue makes me want to eat better and exercise more and the whole neighborhood is so happy for them and their new baby. Sue and Neil are going to be awesome, wonderful parents. :-)
